The disinfection step for borehole and rain water
If your water comes from a borehole, rain tank or well, the one thing an ordinary filter can't promise is that it's free of bacteria. A UV steriliser passes your water over an ultraviolet lamp that inactivates bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, with no chemicals added and no change to the taste. UV works on clear, already-filtered water and must be sized to your flow, from a single drinking tap to the whole house.

Worth knowing before you buy
A UV steriliser doesn't filter anything out — no sediment, chemicals, tastes or odours. It deals with microorganisms only, which is why it's designed to be installed as the final stage after your filters.
UV only works on clear water: cloudiness shades microorganisms from the lamp. Its performance also depends on staying within the unit's rated flow — exceed it and the water passes too fast for a full dose.
UV leaves nothing behind in the water. That's why the taste doesn't change, but it also means the protection happens at the moment of treatment — water stored afterwards can be recontaminated.
The lamp only sterilises while it has mains power, so water drawn during a power outage passes through untreated — worth knowing if your area load-sheds. Clean the quartz sleeve when you change the lamp.
For very high flows beyond 90 litres a minute, or complex commercial installations, it's worth asking The Water Filter Factory team for advice rather than guessing at sizing.
Keeping it running
The UV lamp is rated for 8,000 hours (about 11 months if it runs around the clock), so plan the lamp change before a year is up, even if the lamp still glows: output fades well before it fails. Replacement ballasts and quartz-sleeve O-rings are also available from The Water Filter Factory when your unit needs them.
