Making rain tank water safe to drink
Rainwater is soft, free and lovely to live with — but it arrives off a roof and then stands in a tank, sometimes for months. Filtering it is not the same as making it safe. Here is what a rain tank actually needs.

Is rainwater safe to drink straight from the tank?
No. Treat that as the starting position and work back from it. Rainwater that falls on a roof and collects in a tank has been treated by nobody, tested by nobody, and disinfected by nobody. Clear, sweet-tasting tank water can still be unsafe, because bacteria have no taste, no smell and no colour.
This is not scaremongering about rainwater harvesting, which is a genuinely good thing to do. It is simply the difference between water for the garden, the washing machine and the toilet — where tank water is excellent — and water you intend to drink, which needs a deliberate treatment step.
What actually gets into a rain tank?
Your roof is the collection surface, and it collects everything. Dust, leaves, insects and bird droppings all wash in with the rain, and the first rain after a dry spell carries the most.
Then the water sits. Stored water with organic material in it is a hospitable place for bacteria to multiply, and a tank can hold water for months between good rains. Time is working against you in a way it never does with a municipal supply, where chlorine is actively protecting the water right up to your tap.
What does a rainwater setup need?
Three things, in order. Sediment filtration to take out the debris, coarse to fine. Carbon to deal with tastes and odours. Then a disinfection step as the final stage — and that is the one people leave out.
Filtration and disinfection are different jobs. A sediment and carbon stack produces water that looks clean and tastes clean, which is exactly what makes skipping the last step so tempting. But a standard 3-stage system is not designed to deal with bacteria or viruses. It was never the tool for that.

Why UV rather than chemicals?
Both work. UV is what we mostly reach for, because it adds nothing to your water — no chemicals, no dosing to get right, no change to the taste — and it is straightforward to live with. Water passes over an ultraviolet lamp that neutralises up to 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa on the way through.
The honest caveat is power. A UV lamp only sterilises while it has mains electricity, so water drawn during an outage passes through untreated. In a load-shedding country that is a real consideration, not a footnote — if you are on tank water, know your schedule, and do not draw drinking water during an outage.
The lamp is also a consumable. It is rated for 8,000 hours, roughly a year of use, and an ageing lamp usually still glows while it weakens. Glowing is not the same as sterilising, so change it by the calendar rather than by eye.
Why rainwater can attack your plumbing
Rainwater's second catch is stranger than the first. It never touched rock, so it carries almost no dissolved minerals — and that purity makes it slightly acidic and mildly corrosive. It behaves like hungry water, slowly nibbling at copper pipes, taps and geyser elements.
The answer is a calcite remineralising cartridge: a stage filled with natural calcium mineral that the water dissolves a little of as it passes, taking the edge off the acidity. That is exactly what the fourth stage in the SUPERPURE 4-Stage Whole House system does.
Note that this is the opposite problem to hard water. Rainwater needs minerals added; hard water has too many already. Do not fit a calcite stage to solve limescale — it will not help.
What UV will not do
A UV steriliser does not filter anything out. No sediment, no chemicals, no tastes, no odours. It deals with microorganisms only.
That is precisely why it belongs at the end of the chain rather than the start. UV needs clear water to work through, so the filters in front of it are not optional extras — they are what makes the UV stage effective.
